Herodotus: the source author

Herodotus was a fifth-century BCE Greek historian from Halicarnassus and the author of the Histories. He framed his work as an inquiry intended to preserve remarkable human deeds and investigate the causes of war between Greeks and Persians. His narrative ranges across Greek cities, the Persian Empire, Egypt, and the Black Sea, joining accounts of warfare to geography, customs, and traditions.

The Histories was later divided into nine books. Herodotus reports what he saw, collects other people’s accounts, and sometimes compares versions or expresses doubt. Its legends cannot all be treated as verified events; they also show how ancient people explained power, fortune, and unfamiliar cultures. This series preserves those distinctions while bringing the stories to a modern readership.
