Kathleen arrived from Ireland in 1921. On her first evening in America, Uncle Joe brought pizza. She and her mother found it unfamiliar and discarded it when he turned away.

Recalling the moment in 1994, she laughed and explained that they later came to enjoy pizza. An unfamiliar food became a small marker of life in a new country.
